What I have learned so far about Homeschooling

I can totally do it!  It sounds in theory like it could be fun.  I have read a few books which are inspiring.  I already mentioned Pocketful of Pinecones.  Fun easy read.

Another much more down to earth/excel spreadsheet loving type of book was 100 Top Picks for Homeschool Curriculum.  This was more about the nuts and bolts.  It starts off talking about your goals for homeschooling, different types of homeschooling with a chart to help you figure out where you fit, then your kids learning styles, then the different types of curriculum out there and where it fits in with all these things.  WOW, this was right up my alley.  I would be a Charlotte Mason/unit study kind of homeschooling mom.  There are so many curriculum choices it is crazy, but this book can really help me narrow down my choices.  GREAT book!

I am going to read another book this week, Homeschooling: Take a Deep Breath You Can Do This.   I’ll let you know what I think.

So far with all my research I have realized that I am capable of homeschooling and that it can really probably bless my family in many ways.  It has made me feel confident enough that if we decided to do it, I could move forward with more faith than fear.

But the question remains, are we supposed to do this and are we supposed to start next year… are we supposed to homeschool both boys or just one….  lots of questions remain.  But we have plenty of time.  I definitely am happy with where they are at right now, so I have 5 months to decide.  We don’t find out placement in their classes til the day before school starts, so I may have to wait until then to decide, unless I feel very strongly one way or the other before then.

I also am a bit more relaxed about it now.   I was thinking I would mentally have to commit to 4 years, until T1 would be in High School, but my Aunt reminded me I could of course stop at any time.  I think I would realistically want to commit for 1 year, maybe 2, because I hear the first year can be the most challenging.  But it is true I could always send them back to PS if it isn’t working at all.

I know a teacher that would probably be good and flexible for T1, so if he gets her, he could have another good Public School year.  Hmmm, it will be interesting to see what happens.
